Live ride on iPhone

Record with the Ride tab on the iPhone, follow a route, see new tiles, the lock screen Live Activity and the wind.

The app has five tabs: Map, Hunts (your rides), Ride (the middle one), Routes and Me. The Ride tab is where you ride.

Start a ride

  1. Open the Ride tab. The sheet at the bottom shows your square and the route list.
  2. Optionally pick a route. Choosing a route only sets it: you see it on the map, with the tiles to gain in green. If the list is empty, press “Sync” to fetch new routes from Strava and komoot. A route that adds no new tiles is marked “no new”.
  3. Press Start. Without a route, use “Start without route”.

Recording continues with the screen off (the blue location indicator shows it). Allow location access when the app asks.

What you see while riding

  • Colours: amber tiles are new in this ride, stronger blue are tiles you visited again, the gold outline is your biggest square and the white outline is the tile you are in.
  • NEW TILE! appears when you enter a tile you have never visited, and a message when the square grows (for example 11×11 → 12×12).
  • Hard tile: report the current tile as hard straight from the ride.
  • Pause, Finish, Discard: finishing shows a summary, and discarding drops the ride and its tiles.

Guidance along a route (Premium)

With a route set, switch on Guidance. A banner shows the next turn and the distance to the finish, and the green tiles show what is left to gain.

Live Activity on the lock screen

During a ride, the lock screen (and the Dynamic Island on supported iPhones) shows a Live Activity: new tiles, distance and the square, without unlocking your phone. It also shows the wind when data is available.

Wind

  • The arrow shows where the wind blows, with the top of the screen as your direction of travel. A headwind points down toward you, a tailwind points up.
  • The speed is shown with its unit (km/h), with gusts when they are higher. The colour grows stronger with the wind.
  • Wind data comes from Open-Meteo and refreshes about every 10 minutes. With no data, nothing is shown.

After the ride

The ride lands in Rides with its new tiles, and you can make a reel from it. See Reels and sharing. If your Apple Watch recorded too, the two recordings are merged.
