Gridhunt uses open data and open source software. This page credits their authors and lists the licences.
Map data
Maps, the tile grid, obstacles and routes are based on data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.
Base map: OpenFreeMap (vector tiles) using the © OpenMapTiles schema.
Place names: OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Road and obstacle data: Overpass API servers.
Weather and wind
Weather data by Open-Meteo.com — weather data under CC BY 4.0. Wind forecasts are indicative.
Routing
Routes are calculated by BRouter (MIT licence) on our own server from OpenStreetMap data. A route is a “Produced Work” under the ODbL.
How we determine hard and impassable tiles
Some tile information is derived from OpenStreetMap data. In line with the ODbL (§ 4.6), we describe the method:
- Impassable: in each tile (OSM grid, zoom level 14) we check 17 points (a 4×4 grid plus the centre). A tile is impassable when at least 14 of them lie in OSM areas such as military land, zoos and enclosures, hazard zones, water, or protected areas with no access.
- Hard: a tile where at least 8 of 17 points lie on wetland (natural=wetland, flood_prone=yes), or which has less than 500 m of roads rideable by bike (excluding motorways, roads under construction, steps, and roads with no or private access).
- Community reports: users can mark a tile as hard or impossible. Manual unlocking and other people's rides never make tiles in military, private or closed areas passable.
- We fetch the data live from the Overpass API and cache it for up to 30 days. We don't publish a separate database based on it.
